Rev limiter or rev-limited coil: which should I run?
A rev-limited coil gives you one fixed limit, and you pull the flywheel to fit it. A rev limiter like the Steamer Power Guardian™ wires into the coil you already have, and you set any limit you want from your phone.
Side by side
- Fitting: a coil swap means the flywheel comes off. Guardian is three wires: kill, ground, two-step.
- The limit: a coil is one number, set when it was made. Guardian is any number you set in the STOKER app, with live RPM.
- Changing it: to rev past a rev-limited coil's number, you need an unlimited coil. With Guardian you change the limit in the pits in seconds.
- Extras: Guardian adds a two-step launch limit and a choice of soft, medium, or hard.
- Power: Guardian has its own battery and charges off USB-C. It needs nothing from the engine's electrical system.
Running both
Already running a rev-limited coil? Guardian can only lower the ceiling, never raise it. Your limit is the lower of the two.
Guardian can't override a rev-limited coil. To spin the engine past the coil's limit, fit an unlimited coil and let Guardian set the limit.
What it costs
The Guardian is $149.99 on pre-order and $175 regular. It costs more than a rev-limited coil because it does more than one job: any limit you want, changed from your phone, plus a two-step and a choice of how it hits.
